MELINDA LOOI COUTURE EXHIBITS AT DE YOUNG, SAN FRANCISCO
Melinda Looi Couture has participated in ‘Contemporary Muslim Fashions’ in September 2018, which is the first major museum exhibition to explore the complex and diverse nature of Muslim fashion and current modest dress codes.
Organized by The Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco, this pioneering exhibition will examine how Muslim women have become arbiters of style within and beyond their communities.
Melinda Looi showcased two masterpieces, launched fashion show and the exhibition itself from 22nd Sept 2018 to 6th January 2019.
The piece “The Paradise Within” inspired by the beautiful beaches of Malaysia. Untouched and unpolluted by development, the beaches at Emerald Bay, Pangkor Laut is breathtaking and sight to behold. Melinda uses signature silk chiffon to represent the soft waves and the emerald green colours to capture the deep, clear green water. Besides, the embellishments on the outfits ingeniously embody the richness of the corals and jewels of the sea.
“Sunset in Africa” inspired by the magical, almost mythical sunset in Africa. Through Melinda’s creation, she presented her personal sartorial interpretation of solitary trees silhouetted against skies burning ambers, oranges and yellows as dusk sets in, gradually transitioning from burnt ochres into blues, then eventually darkening into purples. The richness of these colours and the fluidity of movements are captured by the weaved silk fabric in the richest shades of red and green. Melinda Looi wanted to design a collection that is feminine yet strong demure yet untamed, a stunning combination of contrasts, just like the bins statement accessories such as the handmade huge oversized horns.
“I am honoured to be selected by this exhibition and I believe it is about time that a major museum is exploring Muslim and modest dress codes. I applaud the de Young Museum, which welcomes 1.7 million visitors annually, for bringing the topic of contemporary Muslimah fashion to wider audiences and start a global discussion” said Melinda.
Due to the exhibitions overwhelming success the Contemporary Muslim Fashions exhibition will be traveling next to the Museum Angewandte Kunst, Frankfurt, Germany, where it will be on display from April 4 through September 15, 2019. The enthusiasm for this exhibition has been remarkable, and three esteemed international museums have requested to exhibit the collections.
